  Flint High School
School Uniform and Appearance Policy
2009 - 2010

The following uniform has been approved by the governors in Summer 2009, following consultation with students and parents /carers.

Statement of commitmentThis policy adheres to the principles outlined in Flintshire LEA's Diversity and Equality Policy. By promoting equality we mean

·        identifying and reporting discrimination and inequality.

·        treating people with dignity and respect.

·        promoting rights and responsibilities.

The word parents in this policy include carers.Students in Year 11 from September 2009 are allowed to wear the previous uniform although they must follow the other rules as stated.

School Uniform and Appearance

We believe that a smart uniform is very important; it demonstrates the pride that students take in our school and signals their belonging and commitment to our learning community. It also reflects the high standards which we set throughout. No extremes of appearance are acceptable - this includes hairstyles as well as dress - and the school asks for the support of parents in ensuring their children dress and present themselves correctly. Any student not in full uniform or whose appearance does not meet our standards may be sent home. In case of unforeseen problems with uniform, parents should contact the appropriate Learning Manager.

In accepting a place at Flint High School, parents agree to these rules.

The school will decide what is extreme and if you are in any doubt about your child's hair style, please check with a senior member of staff. Head bands and hair bobbles should be of a dark colour and not excessive. Tramlines, shaved designs in hair or shaved eyebrows are not permitted.

Make-up is only allowed if it is very subtle and is applied minimally. The school reserves the right to make that judgement and we will ask students to remove excess. Nail varnish is not allowed.

Equality and Diversity The school is respectful of all faiths and where specific faiths require alterations to the uniform and appearance code, we will do our best to accommodate those needs. Students with a disability, who may need amendments to the uniform, will be accommodated. Parents are advised to contact the Headteacher,

Financial assistance The LEA operates a clothing scheme to help some families with the purchase of uniform. Application forms for a grant to help with the cost are available from school reception.

Dear Parent/Carer,

New uniform September 09

School equipment

Painting party half term

As we are now in our summer term, I wanted to write to you with information about our new uniform and other items to keep you up to date.

We have been in a process of consultation about a change in the uniform with students, staff and governors.  We held a meeting for parents last term, when most parents supported a new, more traditional uniform.  They wanted the students to look smart and to reflect the pride they have in attending our school.  This is part of a new look and image for Flint High School, which we believe is important.  Parents at the meeting elected for all our students to wear the new uniform from September, except Year 11, who will have a choice.

Some parents of youngsters in year 6, who will be joining us in September, have seen the uniform, which is on display in reception, and their reaction has been very positive.  Understandably, some parents have reservations and I will reply to individuals, who have concerns. You are welcome to contact me. The governors wanted to ensure that the price is as reasonable as possible, as did FLAG members, our PTA, who debated carefully about the price of individual items.

Very shortly, I shall send you our new uniform and appearance policy, which covers clothing as well as hair styles, jewellery etc and I would like to emphasise that we will be strict about what and how uniform is worn in September and we rely on your support in this matter.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY ANY UNIFORM YET UNTIL YOU HAVE RECEIVED THE FULL POLICY

The every day uniform will be a white shirt and black blazer with our school crest, which you can see at the top of this letter. The wording means Strong Castle, Castle of Learning, which is a wonderful reflection of the strength of our community and its focus. We will have a new school tie, a clip-on for health and safety reasons, in silver, dark green and maroon stripes to match the school crest colours. Students will wear a V necked maroon jumper, with our crest, either long or short sleeved, which can be removed in the summer.  Black trousers, and skirts for the girls, if they wish, and black shoes are to be worn.

The PE uniform will stay largely the same; although the current FHS black sweatshirts can be worn for PE as well as rugby tops and black polo shirts.

The blazer and jumper will be available from Forresters in Mold and we will keep a small stock in school.  To help parents and carers, we will hold two or three evenings this term, when you can come into school and buy the uniform here. I will let you know as soon as possible when this will be.  A very rough estimate of the cost of the blazer is £25 and we have estimated that the entire uniform, including two shirts, jumper, tie, trousers or skirt, would be between £60 and £70 depending on size.

Forresters have said they will look at discounts if you buy the whole uniform from them and also for families with more than one child needing a uniform.  We do recognise that this is an expense, although probably cheaper over the year than if your children wore their own clothes for school  every day.  Families entitled to uniform grants can obtain forms from the school and we strongly advise you to claim if you are entitled.

We will start a uniform savings scheme too so if you want to save either £5 or £10 a week, please send the money or cheque into school, made payable to Flint High School, in an envelope clearly marked with your son or daughter’s name and the word ‘Uniform’

Equipment

It is essential that students bring writing equipment, rulers, rubbers and calculators into school and their planner.   I cannot understand how some of our students, particularly in the older years, are here without the correct equipment. A small number of students come to school without a bag, which suggests they have not done homework and they are disorganized.

Please can you help by making sure your son / daughter is properly equipped for learning?

Painting Party

If you have visited our school recently, you will have seen new windows in the music room ,which replaced those which were rotten, and new entrance doors both at the front and the side.  These have been paid for by a WAG grant secured by the LEA.  School has paid for new flooring in the music room and drama studio area; we will be buying new doors and we now need to paint the walls to match.  We are therefore asking parents if you have any surplus paint – either gloss or emulsion – or paint brushes, which you are happy to donate or if you can spare a day or half a day to paint that area during half term May 25th – 30th.  It will make such a difference. You know that we do not have a hall and the drama studio is where we have assemblies and concerts and where we often meet and greet parents.

Please hand in any paint donations to reception and if you can spare a few hours, it will be very much appreciated.  We can provide you with tea and biscuits too!   If willing, phone in and leave your name and preferred time with Mrs Woodward, our receptionist.

And finally…..

We have discovered that not all parents receive communication from us, because students do not always pass letters and newsletters on. If you are reading this, it is not the case!  We will be having a new web site for September, which will keep you much more up to date with events and celebrations – and we have so much to celebrate at Flint High School.

If you would like to be contacted by email instead of or as well as student post, can you email school to let us know? This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it

Yours sincerely,

Pamela McClean Headteacher
